'The Heroic Story of the Visiter Rescue'

A detailed account of the famous rescue in 1881 when the Whitby Lifeboat was dragged overland the six miles to Robin Hood's Bay through 7 foot snowdrifts to rescue the crew of the stricken collier brig 'Visiter'. Illustrations by Dave Jeffery.

The following publications are not by Bayfair but  are highly recommended:

‘Robin Hood’s Bay & Fylingthorpe Through Time’ by Robin Lidster

- 96 pages, over 180 photographs from Robin’s extensive historical collection, and his own camera, giving an insight into the physical and social changes in the local community.

‘Focus on Fylingdales' - a 50 page A5 booklet published in 2007 by the Fylingdales Local History Group. It is an update of a book originally published in 1977 to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

'A History of Robin Hood's Bay'

on DVD by Norman Scholes and James Hutton:

This 32 minute DVD was very well received by an enthusiastic audience at its world premiere at Fylingdales Village Hall on 7th October 2006. With stunning pictures and an informative commentary, Bay is portrayed in physical and historical context.

A Rum Do!’ - based on the book of the same name, by Patricia Labistour.

Robin Hood’s Bay in the 18th century was at the centre of the smuggling “industry”. Ideally situated for such activities, it became one of the “wealthiest places in England for its size” This beautifully filmed DVD captures the atmosphere of those bygone days, and features Pat Labistour telling some of the tales told in her now out-of-print book.

Please note that the sound quality on this DVD, though perfectly audible, is not up to Bay Video’s usual standards.

And in association with the Walmsley Society we can now offer:

Three Fevers  Republished in 2005, this is the latest version of Leo Walmsley's widely-acclaimed novel set in 'Bramblewick' (Robin Hood's Bay) in the 1920s.

A tale of action, adventure and rivalries, and of conflict between man and the elements.

Angler's Moon  Recollections by Leo Walmsley from the time of his boyhood in Robin Hood's Bay at the turn of the 20th century to his later years in Fowey. These tales are linked so effortlessly between Walmsley's present and the distant past. Republished 2008.

Foreigners  Leo Walmsley has captured the atmosphere of a boy's struggle to become accepted in Robin Hood's Bay at the turn of the 20th century, a sensitive study of loneliness and of a childhood spent in a demanding environment. Republished May 2008.

Phantom Lobster  Newly republished in 2009, here Leo Walmsley takes us back to Bramblewick where we share in the success and disasters of the local fishing families and where chasing the elusive lobster pushes the local fisherfolk and their boats to the limit.
